Description:

EASTERN PEOPLES MEDALS AWARDED TO A RUSSIAN SOLDIER
Very rare set of three Medals for Gallantry and Merit for Members of the Eastern Peoples, along with the relevant award documents, given unto Russian Obergefreiter Ivan Gladkij who served in Ostbattalion 628/Grenadier Regt. 745 and Artillery Regt. 1600/Russ. from at least the middle of June, 1944 until Feb. 10, 1945. Present are the three medals with ribbons, two in Bronze and one in Silver, along with the corresponding award documents. Two of the award documents, for a Silver and Bronze Eastern People's Bravery Decoration, 2nd Class, are signed by Gen. FRIEDRICH-WILHELM NEUMANN (1889-1975), commanding general of 712. Infanterie-Division and a Knights Cross recipient. The third award document (Eastern People's Merit Decoration, 2nd Class in Bronze) is signed by Generalmajor SERGEI BUNJATSCHENKO (1902-1946), defector to the German side during World War II, major general in the Russian Liberation Army, and hanged for treason in 1946. The documents bears folds, repaired tears, and marginal chips, clearly having been carried by Gladkij during his service, the medals are generally very good showing the usual tarnish. A very rare assemblage as with Russia conquering and occupying the territory in which this regiment was deployed, the discovery of these medals and documents would have brought Gladkij a swift end.
