EARTH NINETEENTH-CENTURY BRITISH SAILOR'S LETTERS
A fascinating archive of letters penned by ANDREW INDERWICK from 1807-1820 to members of his family describing his voyages and war service on the HMS Conway, the slade Euphrates, Atalanta, and Banterer to places such as Newfoundland and Bermuda. Comprises 40pp. in total, in extremely small part: ‘…We were quite close to Martinique & Guadeloupe endeavoring for several days to entice some Frenchmen out, but I fancy they were intimidated by the opposite part of the Island being closely blocked in with a large fleet. By the time you receive this…the news of the capture of the former Island will reach England, as a great force has gone against it. It is strongly reported here and I have convincing reason to think that a rupture between the Yankies and us will inevitably take place. In staying that I shall receive the news with pleasure…'. In another letter, Inderwick writes of a rather bizarre scene: ‘…at five in the morning the Slade struck…the shore of the Island Langley which is situated in the South Entrance of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, fired several guns, but nothing in sight…the next day…we went on shore in search of inhabitants for assistance about 7 in the morning…a large animal…had been cast on shore…with hoofs like a horse…the wind pipe was lying separate from the body…the length of the body…was 35 feet…the tail was off…its skin was streaked black and dark yellow…'. Other letters reveal more detailed voyage content as well as financial and family matters. Condition varies from very good to fair, but each letter is clearly penned and legible. Most worthy of research and full transcription.
