Description:

EARLY NEW JERSEY: JAMES DRUMMOND
An interesting manuscript document relating to the nephew of JAMES DRUMMOND, 4th EARL OF PERTH, 1ST DUKE OF PERTH (1648-1716), a Scottish peer and partner, with William Penn, in the settlement of East New Jersey in 1681. The document, 3pp. legal folio, Edinburgh, March 9, 1785, comprises an affidavit by two men on behalf of James Drummond Lundin, 1st Baron Perth (1744-1800), Drummond's nephew, which proves the inheritance of Lundin's earldom from the time ‘…since the death of his Elder Brother who took upon himself the stile and title of Lord Drummond…'. Drummond was the son of James Drummond, Earl of Melfort, the younger brother of James Drummond, 4th Earl Perth. He was captain in the 2nd Battalion 42nd Highlanders, serving with that battalion in India. As a collateral relative, Drummond succeeded to his father's claim to the earldom of Perth as his elder brother Thomas, who moved to America and had died in November 1780. Drummond did not use the title, instead becoming ‘Baron' by the Court of Session on March 9, 1785, which declared that he was the person entitled to the Drummond estates. In October, 1797, Drummond was created a Peer as Lord Perth, Baron Drummond. Signed three times by Sir JAMES HUNTER BLAIR (1741-1787) Scottish MP and Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1784-1786. Prominent folds and edge wear but overall very good. Worthy of further research.
