Description:

Early hand-colored, copperplate-engraved map, 20 3/4" x 25 1/2", a depiction of southern South America, including modern Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile. The map was created by French cartographer Guillaume de l'Isle and published circa 1703 by the Amsterdam firm of Jean Covens and Corneille Mortier. While the coastline and the interior regions of the northern area of the map are well-defined, the interior of Patagonia is left mostly blank, showing only a few inaccurately-charted rivers. The Falkland Islands, which had only been encountered by Europeans in 1690, are shown partially, while South Georgia Island is shown many hundreds of miles north of its actual position. Interestingly, two drawings of a long-necked sea serpent appear at lower right, with the French caption "In this icy sea there are many animals that are half bird and half fish; They have the neck like a Swan that they stick out of the water only to take the air, the rest is always under the water". Shows a vertical fold at center with a few spots of discoloration thereto, with minor wear and toning overall and a pencil inscription at top right, else very good.
