(EARLY LONG ISLAND) THOMAS DONGAN
(1634-1715) Colonial governor of New York (1683-1688) noted for calling the first representative legislature for the province and his grant of New York's Charter of Liberties. Manuscript D.S. "Thomas Dongan" as Governor of New York, 1p. folio on vellum, New York, Nov. 25, 1686 being a grant of 100 acres of land on Cow Neck on Long Island to Captain Thomas Hicks, an early Quaker settler of the region. The grant was given to Hicks in consideration of "...one Bushell of good white Merchantable Wheat..." per annum. Endorsed on the verso by Hicks on Oct. 2, 1687. Verso of document also bears several endorsements of Dongan's Secretary J. S. Swinton as well as James Graham, the recorder. This is the same family that gave the name to present-day Hicksville, New York. Text a bit light, usual folds, minor marginal wear, else fine condition.
