64. JUBAL A. EARLY (1819-1894) Confederate major general who fought throughout the war, leading a division at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Spotsylvania, and conducted a threatening raid on Washington. A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., Baltimore, Feb. 24, 1883, thanking a "Miss Kinsley" for a gift. He writes in part: "...I write to thank you and Miss Lathrop for the very handsome basket of flowers which I received at the Hall of the Academy of Music on the night of the 22nd as well as the other present which you handed me at General Johnson's residence. I send you a photograph of myself, and trust you will not think it presumptuous in me to do so..." Fine condition. $500-600
