Description:

EARLY EPHEMERA
Lot of three early pieces of ephemera, includes: Leaf from an English translation of Ovid's "Metamorphosis", 5 1/2"x 7", taken from the second book of the piece. Contains an illustrated capital at the beginning of the passage, depicting two men holding a laurel wreath. Bears a pencil notation at the bottom margin, giving a date of 1567. Ragged left margin, else very good. WITH: An early advertisement, for "Miers, Profile-Painter & Jeweller", on the Strand in London. The piece touts the artist's wares, in part: "Continues to execute likenesses (in profile shade) in a style peculiarly striking & elegant, whereby the most forcible animation is retained, to the minute size, for setting in Rings, Lockets, Bracelets, &c..." Mounted on a piece of rough paper, approx. 3 1/2"x 4 1/2", heavily chipped and toned with age, good. WITH: Woodcut portrait of an unknown man, pasted to a clipping from an unknown book in Latin, with an ink marginal notation, also in Latin, 3 1/2 x 3 1/4". The item is pasted to modern card stock, very good.
