Description:

EARLY BRITISH ABOLITION
An very rare, early printed broadside measuring 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" [sight], Feb. 18, 1792, reading, in full: "The Public is desired to take notice, that a Petition to Parliament for the abolition of the Slave Trade is ready to be signed in the House of [blank] in [blank] by every person who wishes to express his Abhorrence of a Trade so directly Violating the Common Rights of mankind, and so repugnant to the Clearest Dictates of Religion, Justice, and Humanity". According to literature from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, "There was always an international dimension to the early abolitionist movement; indeed, foreign support and intervention were deemed vital to the success of the movement at home. In pursuit of these aims, British abolitionists made contact with the French Société des Amis des Noirs, following its organization in 1788". This organization resulted in the creation of the 1792 Petition to which our broadside refers, presented to the House of Commons. The House voted by a landslide for a gradual abolishment of the slave trade to be fixed on Jan. 1, 1796. Matted and framed, in very good condition. Not examined out of frame.
