Description:

EARLY AMERICAN SLAVE DOCUMENT
Scarce, very early manuscript D.S. 2pp. legal folio, Arequipa, Dec. 2, 1553. Just 61 years after the discovery of America by Columbus, one Diego Pablar gives power to Felipe de Leon to charge all debtors in slaves, gold, silver, jewels, cattle and merchandise from Spain. Signed 11 years after the establishment of the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1542. The Spanish began importing slaves to South America in the later 1520s to replace the rapidly-disappearing native population. By the 1570s, so many slaves had been imported that Africans outnumbered their Spanish masters! One hole at center-right, edges a bit rough and minor toning, overall very good condition.
