EARLY AMERICAN MILITARY-RELATED LETTERS
Good group of fifteen letters and four telegram forms, all dating from the late eighteenth century through the 1880's, and all related to military matters. Includes: Four telegrams, sent by former Union general and politician BENJAMIN BUTLER; a short note from Butler's law offices, asking another attorney for clarification regarding an enclosed court order; an A.L.S. from brig. Gen. THOMAS GILLESPIE, Utica, NY, Aug. 14, 1826, enquiring after the transfer of cannon from one unit to another; a printed copy of Article XXI of the Constitution of the Independent Company of Cadets; an A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., New York, Feb 5, 1883, to Gen. George W Cullum, regarding a court martial conducted at West Point; an A.D.S., 1p. 8vo., Acton, Ma., Feb. 21st, 1803, a set of regimental orders calling for the election of a cavalry regiment's captain and lieutenant; A.D.S., 1p. 8vo. Newburg, Mar. 12, 1783, a receipt for a payment made by a Col. Timothy Pickering; an A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., June 30, 1841, regarding a pension claim made by the widow of a Revolutionary War veteran; an A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Austin, TX, Sep. 11, 1878, from a Col. Jonathan McCoy, promising a favorable recommendation to the governor of Texas; an A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Pension Office, War Department, Washington, D.C., Nov. 25, 1819, regarding pension claims; an A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., Washington, D.C., Jan. 12, 1801, regarding delays in making appointments to the army; an A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Fort Douglas, UT, Dec. 23, 1885, from a Charles G. Morton, transmitting a paper with support for a bill before the senate; A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Middlesex, MA, June 28, 1805, an order to a cavalry officer, commanding him to assemble his troops at a tavern in Lincoln, Massachusetts; A.D.S., 1p. 4to., West Point, NY, May 1, 1814, a receipt from a paymaster; and two additional A.L.S.s.
