(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Fine association T.L.S. "Ike" as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, June 9, 1960 to Gen. JAMES VAN FLEET. In part: "...I am most grateful for your vigorous help on the mutual security program...Since you and others have taken steps to avoid a crippling appropriations cut, the action of the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations...has been twice postponed. Those opposed to this great program of course hope for a waning of public interest. This must not happen...Let's keep it up -- for America, and for the cause of world peace..." Fine. JAMES VAN FLEET (1892-1992) was an American four-star general who landed on the beaches at Normandy and led troops across the Cotentin Peninsula, at the Bulge and at Remagen. He later battled the Chinese in Korea and seized the crucial "Iron Triangle".
