Description:

(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. 'MY DETERMINATION TO ABSTAIN FROM POLITICAL STRUGGLE...' Fine political content T.L.S. on Columbia University letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, July 9, 1948 to a lady in Hollywood. Ike resists calls to run for office, in part: '...I am flattered by the implications of the letter you forwarded and which was supported by your many friends...through you I present my convictions. I do hope that you realize that my determination to abstain from partisan struggle has been adopted only after careful reflection and study...in the best interests of our country...' Light toning, else near fine. Ike was wise: 1948 saw one of the greatest election upsets in American history, as incumbent President Harry S. Truman, the Democratic nominee, defeated Republican Governor Thomas E. Dewey. Ike would win by a landslide four years later, as Truman's support collapsed.
