Description:

(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. A very unusual and interesting Eisenhower-signed item with several great associations, an original illustration in black ink and watercolor paint, 15" x 21", a caricature of ARTHUR A. KIMBALL (1908-1996), a career American public servant who served as Chief of Administration for the U.S. prosecution team during the Nuremberg trials and also helped establish the Economic Cooperation Administration for administering the Marshall Plan. The cartoon shows Kimball departing his position as Staff Director on the President's Advisory Committee on Government Operation (PACGO), holding his appointment as a member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), as Uncle Sam, standing in the background, remarks: "Thanks Art For A Job 'Well Done'". The cartoon is signed by President Eisenhower beneath the image at left in black ink, with no less than 69 additional friends and colleagues of Kimball. These include: MILTON S. EISENHOWER (1899-1985), the President's younger brother and president of Johns Hopkins University; JOHN S.D. EISENHOWER (1922-2013), the President's son, a U.S. Army officer and later U.S. Ambassador to Belgium under Richard Nixon; WILTON B. PERSONS (1896-1977) Eisenhower's White House Chief of Staff; MAURICE STANS (1908-1998), Secretary of Commerce under Nixon, later convicted of campaign finance violations as financial chair of the Committee for the Re-Election of the President for his involvement in Watergate; JOHN J. ALLEN, JR. (1899-1995), U.S. Representative from California's 7th district and Eisenhower's Undersecretary of Commerce for Transportation; CLARENCE B. RANDALL (1891-1967), Eisenhower's Chairman of the Commission on Foreign Economic Policy and Chairman of the Board of the Inland Steel Company; ANDREW GOODPASTER (1915-2005), U.S. Army General who served as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (SACEUR) and Commander in Chief of the United States European Command (CINCEUR); THOMAS E. STEPHENS (1884-1966) Welsh-American artist and portraitist who painted Eisenhower, Truman and Churchill, and whose works hang in the Smithsonian, the White House, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Pentagon; MEYER KESTENBAUM (1896-1960) Chairman of Eisenhower's Commission on Intergovernmental Relations; WILLIAM H. DRAPER III (b. 1928), venture capitalist who became Administrator of the United Nations Development Program; JACK Z. ANDERSON (1904-1981) U.S. Representative for California's 8th district and administrative assistant to Eisenhower; JAROLD KIEFFER (1923-2017), Social Security Administration Assistant Administrator and Executive Director of the Kennedy Center; WILLIAM G. GRAY (1921-2014) Republican activist and advisor to President Eisenhower; HOMER H. GRUENTHER (1900-1977) special assistant to Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson; ROBERT L. SCHULZ (1908-1984) military aide to Eisenhower as general and president; EDWARD A. MCCABE (1917-2008) Administrative Assistant to the President and founding chairman of Sallie Mae; ANNE W. CULLEN, Eisenhower's Secretary of the Council on Foreign Economic Policy; NLRB members BOYD S. LEEDOM (1906-1969), JOSEPH A. JENKINS (1919-1975), and PHILIP RAY RODGERS; and many others. The artist of the caricature, Assistant to the Deputy Assistant to the President for veteran's affairs EARLE D. CHESNEY (1900-1966) also signs in black ink at the lower right of the illustration, adding the date "15 Sept. 60". Shows faint toning with mat lines at the edges, else very good. Altogether, this piece represents a veritable who's who of Eisenhower's White House staff. Also present is the official program for the January, 1957 inauguration of Eisenhower and his vice-president, Richard Nixon, 48pp. 4to., in its original envelope, and in fine condition.
