Description:

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Excessively rare and fine association signed book, Report by the Supreme Commander to the Combined Chiefs of Staff on the Operations in Europe of the Allied Expeditionary Force 6 June 1944 to 8 May 1945, [Washington]: Government Printing Office, [n.d., c. 1945], 123pp. large format with eleven full-page maps. This is Eisenhower's official report on the invasion of Europe and conquest of Germany, including the Directive given to Eisenhower on the Feb. 12, 1944, with chapters include the Allied assault on the Normandy beaches, the breakout, the advance to the Seine, the Rhine crossings and the final defeat of the German armies. This is an extremely rare copy, especially bound in black leather with gilt title and SHAEF emblem printed on cover, along with the name of the recipient, Eisenhower's brother, Edgar N. Eisenhower. The front and rear pastedowns and flyleaves are lined in silk, and the front flyleaf is inscribed: "To my brother Edgar Dwight D. Eisenhower". Very light wear to corners, else tightly bound and in very good to fine condition. We have been unable to locate any records of the sale of any such specially-bound copies of this report, let alone signed presentation copies. Edgar N. Eisenhower (1889-1971) was the older brother of Dwight D. Eisenhower, an attorney who practiced law in Tacoma and was conservative in his political leaning.
