Description:

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Unusual T.L.S. 1p. 8vo., on Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force letterhead, Feb. 21, 1944. Eisenhower thanks his correspondent for a cake, in part: "...The cake you sent me last September and your note that accompanied it just reached me here. I cannot tell you how deeply I appreciate your generous thought. Moreover, I bear willing witness to the excellence of the cake...Nothing gives me greater pleasure than the constantly accumulating evidence that the United Nations are really a unit in this war...". Public relations, rather than a five-month-old pastry, may have sparked Ike's letter. In the prior week, New Zealand troops withstood heavy casualties in the battle of Monte Cassino, Italy. This battle was part of a push to gain the Liri Valley and march on towards Rome following the Americans' failed attack on Anzio. On Feb. 15, Allies bombed the historic Monte Cassino monastery in hopes of supporting the ground attack on Cassino - a decision which remained controversial until war's end. Cassino failed to fall to the Allies until May. With original envelope, light wear, very good.
