Description:

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Fine content carbon T.L.S. "D.E.", 1p., 4to., New York, June 4, 1949, a form letter from Eisenhower to his close circle of friends offering a glimpse of his relationship with his wife. In part: "... I am about to attempt to repeat the party that you helped me stage last July 1 in celebration of Mamie's (this time) thirty-three years of endurance of a husband of doubtful disposition and uncertain temper... Since we will want to have everybody here for dinner that evening I suggest that we all plan on concentrating on 60 Morningside Drive during the morning... Last year our tycoon member (George Allen) produced one of his numerous airplanes to bring the Washington contingent to New York. We shall expect him to do the same this year, but it is to be understood that through doing so he acquires no special privileges nor any sympathy whatsoever in the bridge games that will be a large part of the entertainment over the weekend..." Eisenhower's tongue-in-cheek directive is addressed to General Everett S. Hughes, General Alfred Gruenther, former Reconstruction Finance Corporation director George E. Allen, Henry Sayler, General Howard Snyder, General Arthur Nevins, and their wives. On verso he signs again "Ike" setting forth his return address. Minor folds, else fine.
