Description:

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
(1890 - 1969) Thirty-fourth President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. A fine archive of ten T.L.S.s, signed with initials "D.S.", both Presidential and post-Presidential, each to Eisenhower's Executive Officer and aide-de-camp Ernest "Tex" Lee. Spanning 1952-1963, Ike writes on a variety of subjects from social content to appointments and so forth. In very small part: "[Dec. 23, 1952]...I am writing you to express my deep personal gratitude for the outstanding work you did on behalf of our campaign. The dedicated group of Americans who organized themselves into the now famous movement known as the 'Citizens for Eisenhower-Nixon', played a unique role in the events that led to our victory...[Sept. 2, 1953]I appreciate your interest in writing and suggesting a candidate for the Hoover Commission. However, I personally am authorized to appoint only two persons...I named Herbert Hoover and James Farley...[Dec. 30, 1954] A few months ago I did a 'painting' of Washington and later had a lithograph made of it to give as a Christmas gift. While I consider my part in the production woefully inadequate, it nevertheless occurs to me that you might possibly like one...[Feb. 1, 1954] I wonder if it would be convenient for you to come to an informal stag dinner...[June 9, 1955] Much as I should like to give whatever impetus I could to the Community Chest Drive in Indianapolis, at the time I make the annual national appeal...[Oct. 16, 1961]Again I am indebted to you...for remembering my birthday...[July 3, 1962] Mamie and I were...delighted that you remembered our Anniversary...[Oct. 26, 1962] I am sorry we missed each other in Indiana...political trips are so crowded...[June 1, 1963] Word has reached me indirectly that you recently suffered a heart attack. I do hope by the time this note reaches you, you will be well on the road to recovery. It I may offer a bit of my expert medical advice, it is this: It is extremely important that you follow to the letter the instructions of the doctors. They probably will...insist, after you are back in your normal routine, upon a period of midday rest. Take it...". Lee (1911-1965), was a San Antonio native who joined the Army and became Eisenhower's Executive Officer and Aide-de-Camp when the future general was a colonel. Accompanied Eisenhower through the ranks, and the war, remaining with Eisenhower through the planning and execution of the invasions of Sicily and Normandy, and ultimately the conquest of Berlin. Most bear original envelopes, very good to fine.
