Description:

DUTCH COLONIAL ANTI-NATIONAL SOCIALIST BROADSIDE
Scarce printed broadside in Dutch, 14 1/2" x 19 3/4", published by the editors of the newspaper "De Vaderlander" ("The Fatherlander") in Salatiga, a city in central Java, then a Dutch colonial possession. The broadside, addressed "To the Fifth Column!", offers a sharp warning to citizens who would sympathize with the NSDAP or the "Nationaal-Socialistiche Beweging in Nederland"("National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands"), or NSB. In small part: " When you have taken the oath of allegiance to our Prince and our Government and at the same time supported the N.S.B ... Then you are guilty of perjury!... If you still have sympathy for your cherished N.S.B., after Germany overwhelmed Austria and had broken a nobleman like Von Schussnig physically and morally from lust to murder... Then you are of the same miserable blow as Hitler and his henchmen! When you have endorsed the hollow phrases of the traitor [NSB leader Anton] Mussert by your subscription or contributions to his organ and movement... Then you were cut from the same rotten wood!... When you sympathize with the N.S.B , you can also do what the N.S.B.-ers did in Holland! Then perhaps you will also betray our Land...
Then you will perhaps also point machine guns at our soldiers, like the N.S.B. villains in Rotterdam did... Then you may also try to hit the dagger in our back... Then perhaps you will perhaps once out for our children in battle as living shields for you... And therefore: not in our midst and not behind our back we want you! Get out of our society and join the other side that that we can see you!" It is marked at bottom as being printed by "Van Dorf" in the Javan coastal city of Semarang. The announcement was almost certainly printed after the German invasion of the Netherlands in May of 1940, and before the fall of the Dutch East Indies to Japanese invaders in March of 1942. The broadside shows folds, a 1" sq. area of paper loss at upper right not affecting any text, and some soiling overall, else very good.
