Description:

Fine content R.A.F. Air Combat report by P/O JOHN FLINDERS (1917-1998) of 32 Squadron, Biggin Hill, 1p. 4to., [n.p., likely a French field], May 19, 1940. Flinders completes his dramatic combat report at two different times, once in pencil and signing his name "P/O FLINDERS" in block letters, with the description of the action written in black ink. With the British trapped on the French coast, Flinders notes that he had been dispatched on "Special Patrol" to "Le Cateau", about thirty miles southeast of Dunkirk. At 13,000 feet he encounters an Me-109: "...we were attacked from above and behind by about 12 Me 109s. I turned immediately...and climbed and saw an Me 109 on my starboard side...I positioned myself on his tail and as he came out of the turn opened fire. After about 3 seconds he turned slowly onto his back and dived inverted...the aircraft gained speed...I was left behind...I lost sight of him in the clouds...I saw one machine which I believe to be a Hurricane in flames and the pilot descending by parachute..." Trimmed at top, else fine condition.
