Description:

DUELING
A very rare pamphlet criticizing the practice of dueling by J[ames] S[ilk] Buckingham, Duelling. Reasons for Legislative Interference to Prevent the Practice of Duelling. ([London]: C. Whiging, [n.y. but ca.1832-7]) 16pp. 8vo. with later paper wraps added by JOSEPH DUNNINGER (1892-1975) and bearing his bookplate and signature on cover. Extremely rare, we have found no copies of this work referenced in American Book Prices Current: the only extant institutional copy is at Harvard University (OCLC# 20080603). Buckingham presents an able argument against the practice, citing its prohibition in many nations on the continent as well as a proposal for the establishment of "Courts of Honor" to adjudicate disputes between gentlemen. Pages very clean with only very minor marginal wear, else very fine condition.
