DUCHY OF BRUNSWICK MEDAL OF MERIT FOR ART AND SCIENCE, SECOND CLASS
A very scarce early 20th-century Imperial German award, the Duchy of Brunswick Medal of Merit for Art and Science, Second Class, established in 1908 by Duke Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg. The obverse of the 2 x 1.5 in. silver ovoid medal depicts the right-profile bust of Duke Karl I of Brunswick and Luneburg, within the motto 'CAROLUS D G DVX BRVNSVIC ET LVNEBURG'. The reverse depicts the Saxon steed forcene beneath a crown, within the motto ‘DEM VERDIENST IN KVNST VND WISSENCHAFT' [‘For Merit in Art and Science']. The edge of the medal is ringed by a laurel wreath with floral embellishments, with a suspension loop at top. The loop is fitted with a suspension ring attaching the medal to a 1.25 in. wide red silk ribbon with yellow edges. The obverse is uniformly darkened, worn bright at the extremities, while the reverse is bright overall, again showing wear to the extremities.
