DRAKE DEKAY
(1836 - 1886) Provost Marshal of Washington, DC, served on the staffs of Generals Mansfield, Pope and Hooker. He's most remembered for his very large and bold signature, signed thus so it could be read on passes at a distance! Good content war-date D.S. on 'Headquarters, Defences of Washington' letterhead, Dec. 14, 1862, to the commanding officer of the 108th N.Y.Vols. advising that Cpl.Charles Cone of Co. C of that regiment who had been granted a thirty-day leave, had failed to return to duty and was now absent without leave, failing to report at Mt. Pleasant Hospital. Fine. Cone had been wounded at Antietam on Sep. 17, 1862, only six weeks after mustering-in. He would be discharged fior disability on Dec. 10, 1862.
