Description:

DRAKE DE KAY
(1836 - 1896) Union officer, brevetted lieutenant-colonel for gallantry. De Kay served on the staffs of Generals Mansfield, Pope, and Hooker but is likely most remembered for his enormous, bold signature. History notes that is was penned in that manner so that sentinels would be able to recognize passes signed by him at a distance! Partly-printed war-date D.S. with his distinctive signature, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 26, 1862, a furlough given to Pvt. E. J. Smith of the 7th Ohio granting him 60 days leave on account of illness, with three signed endorsements on verso. It appears that Smith commenced his journey at Ft. Gaines, Ga. bound for Ohio. Some toning, else very good.
