A.L.S. of Private Aaron W. Maust of the 174th Penn. Infantry, 4pp. 8vo., Beaufort, SC, Mar. 6, 1863 to ‘Friend John', in part: ‘…I am well at present…the rest of the boys are well except Lieutenant Rufe, he is laid down…in the hospital sick. When I last wrote we layed on the boat we layed on the boat 13 days then we moved on to Saint Halena Island we lay there for 18 days while we lay there we had a grand review by Generals Hunter and Nagley there was about 8 thousand man out it was a fine affair and the boys made a good appearance…[other soldiers] and myself went out on a scout…after we came on the Island…we traveled about ten miles acrost the Island when we came to a place the darkeys said it belonged to Dr White but the old Dr was not at home there was a larger planters house there and quite a town of nigger huts around the house there was full of Oranges and you may think it did not take us long to climb the trees and get those golden apples off…you ought to have seen the regiment of wenches after us you may think they done some hollering and squalling but we are soldiers now we moved on orderly and after awhile they went back…on the 26th of Feb we moved on the boat and the next day we run up to Beaufort…we have three bunks in our room and a fire place…we have some gay old times in there living is pretty good…we stand 8 hours a day 2 hours on and 4 off we have got to be Sunday Soldiers we have to wear white gloves…they had a draft in this town the other day to draft every able bodied nigger yesterday they hunted them up they gathered them up in droves like sheep there is a whole brigade of them about 3 miles from us…'. Fine condition.
