Description:

DOUGLAS MACARTHUR Very rare, fine association D.S. "Douglas MacArthur", 8pp. 4to., a booklet titled "Address by GENERAL OF THE ARMY DOUGLAS MACARTHUR" in which is printed the text of the historic speech the general gave to the members of the Association of Graduates and the Corps of Cadets and guests upon his acceptance of the Sylvanus Thayer Award at West Point, May 12, 1962, boldly signed by MacArthur in blue ink on the front cover. This speech is considered one of the greatest speeches ever given, ending with the immortal refrain: "Today marks my final roll call with you, but I want you to know that when I cross the river my last conscious thoughts will be of The Corps, and The Corps, and The Corps. I bid you farewell". Other notable quotes include: "...Duty - Honor - Country...They are your rallying point: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn...The soldier, above all other men, is required to practice the greatest act of religious training - sacrifice...You are the leaven which binds together the entire fabric of our national system of defense...The Long Gray Line has never failed us...The shadows are lengthening for me. The twilight is here...But in the evening of my memory, always I come back to West Point. Always there echoes and re-echoes Duty - Honor - Country...". Small tape stain on last page, just clear of text, else very good .
