Description:

DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
(1880 - 1964) American general and Allied Supreme Commander in the Pacific in World War II, accepted the surrender of Japan and was later dismissed by Truman for advocating an invasion of China. Good content T.L.S. as Chief of Staff on War Department letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Sep. 26, 1935 to a man at the Army Supply Base in Brooklyn. In part: "...Before leaving Washington for the Philippine Islands I desire to convey to you my thanks for your fine support of the Army. It was good of you to drop in on me and express again your approval...of my efforts in behalf of National Defense..." Mounted, a bit toned, and set behind a mat. When the Philippines achieved semi-independent status in 1935, President of the Philippines Manuel Quezon asked MacArthur to supervise the creation of a Philippine Army. Quezon and MacArthur had already been personal friends for 35 years. With Roosevelt''s approval, MacArthur accepted the assignment. He would remain in service in the Philippines until his flight to Australia on the night of 12 March 1942.
