DOUGLAS MACARTHUR (1880 - 1964) American general and Allied Supreme Commander in the Pacific in World War II, accepted the surrender of Japan and was later dismissed by Truman for advocating an invasion of China. In part: ""¦Mrs. MacArthur has shown me your recent letter telling of the fifteenth anniversary meeting"¦of the Santo Tomas ex-internees. Their heroism under extreme suffering and privation is one of my most poignant memories. I pray that a merciful God will protect and preserve them in the future for they have more than paid their full debt to humanity"¦" Fine condition. Santo Tomas Internment Camp, also known as the Manila Internment Camp, was the largest of several camps in the Philippines in which the Japanese interned enemy civilians, mostly Americans, during World War II. The camp housed more than 3,000 internees from 1942 to 1945. Conditions deteriorated during the war and by the time of their liberation, many of the prisoners were near death from starvation.
