Description:

DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
Grouping of photos and documents belonging to Laurence H. Nichols, recording his service in the US Army and his service in World War I and in South Africa. The lot includes numerous picture postcards of Laurence and his comrades, snapshots from South Africa, a reunion invitation, a book of ration stamps, and Nichols' War Department Identification Certificate. Most interestingly, it includes Nichols' official military records book, 5 1/2" x 7" which has been inscribed and signed by General DOUGLAS MACARTHUR(1880-1964). MacArthur has written: "This officer's service was efficient and honorable and reflected credit upon himself and his organization." and adds his signature. Also included is a typed note, 1p. 4to., Valdosta, GA, May 20, 1957, sent to MacArthur by Nichols: "Dear Sir: I would deem it an honor if you would endorse my Record Book as my Brigadier. You were instrumental in rescuing me from Town Major work, and I later served as liaison when the 151st M.G.Bn functioned as a unit under your command in the Argonne-Meuse attack on Hill 263." A fascinating archive of one man's military experience. Very good.
