Description:

(1898 – 2000) Second wife of Gen. Douglas MacArthur and with her husband when the Japanese attacked the Philippines. She went with him to Corregidor, and even when the island was attacked, she refused to leave her husband. Only when President Roosevelt ordered the MacArthurs to leave did they go to Australia. Lot of two war-date T.L.S.s with transmittal envelopes, 2pp. total, 8vo., "Australia", July 30, 1942 and June 26, 1944, both to a "Mrs. Backman". Largely routine friendly content, in part: I have letters from the various [friends]...that were in Manila...I appreciated hearing from you...through Colonel Meader...we will all enjoy the pralines I have not tasted them in years...I hear off and on from...all the old Manila friends, and of course many of the civilian wives who are in the States, their husbands still in the Philippines [prisoners]..." The transmittal envelops both bear censorship signatures of Colonel SIDNEY L. HUFF, an aide to General MacArthur for fifteen years from 1936 to 1951. One letter and envelope damp stained, else very good.
