Douglas MacArthur 1880-1964 American general and Allied Supreme Commander in the Pacific in World War II, accepted the surrender of Japan and was later dismissed by Truman for advocating an invasion of China. Superb content A.L.S. at the conclusion of a letter to him, 1+pp. 4to., 1955 The general has been invited by J. Ralph Granara of the Military Order of the Purple Heart to address a convention of recipients of the medal in Boston to be held on "Purple Heart Day". At the bottom of the letter and on verso He writes, in full: "Please give my affectionate greetings to my old comrades-in-arms of the Purple Heart. Tell them of the respect and admiration in which they are held by the American people. The Purple Heart is a unique decoration. It is the only one from which is entirely eliminated any application of privilege or special selection. It is conferred solely by enemy action and therefore not beholden to any other influence. It bears testimony for all time and for all eyes of a great sacrifice. It signals the blood you have spilled in battle for our beloved country. There could be no greater honor. Douglas Macarthur". MacArthur was the most decorated soldier of World War I, receiving several Purple Hearts himself Folds, otherwise very good. A superb commentary!
