Description:

Great lot of sixteen Signal Corps photographs, 8.5 x 6.5 in. b/w, once belonging to U.S. soldier Morris Burstein, 42nd Rainbow Division. These photographs most notably include: an image of President Wilson and his First Lady decorating the graves of deceased U.S. soldiers; an image of a mass grave of American soldiers in the Ardennes (captioned on the verso 'it is impossible to bury them separately…'); an image of released American and British prisoners-of-war walking to the Allied front in France; an image of German POWs captured in the night of July 1, 1918; an image of the memorial exercises in a new amphitheater in Arlington Cemetery, commemorating the service of World War I soldiers; and more. Each photograph is annotated on the verso. The lot comes with three letters between Burstein's son and the Curator of West Point, reading in part: 'My father became close friends with…a Signal Corps photographer…He apparently made copies for himself, and as a token of his friendship, he also gave copies to my father…I am pleased to make a gift of the photographs to the West Point Museum in memory of my father, Morris Burstein…' Very good condition.
