Description:

Pair of aluminum door handles with integral escutcheon plates, each approx. 8 1/2" x 5 3/4", taken from the ruins of Luftwaffe chief Hermann Goering's residence at Obersalzburg by an American soldier. The handles and plates are entirely unmarked, but are accompanied by a notarized letter of provenance from retired U.S. Army colonel Carl E. Anderson, dated May 18, 1978 at Middlebury, Connecticut and addressed to a former purchaser. The letter reads, in full: "This pertains to the two sets of metal (probably aluminum) door handles and face plates secured from the undersigned last week. At the end of World War II, the writer [Anderson] was a Lt. Col., Division Ordnance Officer, on the staff of Major General Maxwell Taylor, Commanding Officer of the 101st Airborne Division that occupied Berchtesgaden ares of Austria. The writer removed the above noted articles fro two of the doors of one of the buildings that comprised the lodge area of Air Marshall Hermann Goering of the German Army, and kept them as souvenirs [all sic]." The relics show minor dings and wear overall, else very good. Two pieces.

Shipments are sent via USPS Priority, USPS International Priority, DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
