Description:

A poignant and very rare unofficial U-boat document, 1p. folio, [at sea], Nov. 26, 1941, a "baptismal certificate" given to Mtr. Ober Gefr. Karl Kirchner of U-124 upon his first transit of the Equator. The decorative document pictures "Poseidon", a mermaid, sunken ship, fish etc. with an image of U-124 with edelweiss painted on the conning tower at top. Near fine condition. On this voyage, U-124, nicknamed "Edelweissboot" and under Lieutenant Johann Mohr, left Lorient on Oct. 30, 1941. She took on 104 survivors of the auxiliary cruiser ATLANTIS and was also able to sink one merchant ship and a light cruiser. The submarine would have ten successful patrols. She would leave Lorient for the last time on March 27, 1943. Heading southwest, she had hardly left the Bay of Biscay when she was attacked and sunk by two British warships with the loss of all hands.
