Description:

DOOMED JEW IN GHETTO WRITES JEWISH WOMAN SLAVE LABORER
A rare and quite awful piece of postal history, a postcard written by a woman at the small Polish Jewish ghetto at Dombrowa to a woman friend who was at the time held at the women's slave labor camp at Gellenau, Austria. This card was written by Berle 'Sara' Rosenblum, at Dambrowa at Slioka 'Sara' Rydka[?] at Gellenau. It is largely untranslated but the writer seems not to have heard from her friend. The purple handstamped 'Z is a censor's stamp, and the postcard is canceled June 12, 1943. The small Dombrowa Jewish ghetto near Bendzin, Poland, was built in 1942. Almost immediately afterward, deportations to the Auschwitz death camp began. The Dombrowa ghetto was liquidated June 26, 1943 - two weeks after Rosenblum wrote this letter - when the few remaining residents were dispersed to the Srodula ghetto, a stop on the way to Auschwitz.
