Description:

DONALD TRUMP
(b. 1946) Controversial American financier, deal maker and gambling mogul, once near bankruptcy, he recovered his wealth and successfully ran for president in 2016.  A RARE TRUMP SELF-PROMOTING LETTER WITH A RARE ALIAS ‘JOHN BARON' Early, fine association T.L.S. signed with a rare variant of his alias ‘John Baron', 1p. 4to., New York, Aug. 28, 1974, on The Trump Organization letterhead to Peter Jenkins, a writer for the West Side Neighborhood Guide ‘Wisdom's Child', published in the 1970s and 1980s. Trump sends Jenkins the ‘…article as discussed'. The article, 5pp. 4to., is attached at top left with a staple and concerns the development of the 60th Street Yards and 30th Street Yards. On the fourth page, Trump has drawn a bracket around a paragraph which reads, in part: ‘…Mr. Trump did state...that numerous major department store chains have shown a great and unyielding interest in being encompassed at the base or ground level of each development…'.  In 1968 the New York Central Railroad merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad but despite this, the railroad declared bankruptcy in 1970. In 1976, the 60th Street Yard, which received between 800 and 900 rail cars a day in its heyday, was abandoned. Trump purchased an option for the property from the Penn Central railroad in 1974 and set his sights on developing the area with large scale projects that included ‘Lincoln West' and ‘Trump City'. Following a 20-year sequence of audacious proposals that were shot down by equally vociferous community opposition, the project was taken over by six non-profit civic groups who persuaded Trump to adopt a new plan titled ‘Riverside South' in 1991. It was approved by the city and eventually nineteen buildings were erected, and the parkland along the Hudson River waterfront was built up and deeded to the City of New York. Trump sold a controlling interest in the project to a consortium of investors in 1994, and ceased having active involvement in the project in 2001. Boldly signed and emendated in blue felt tip. Light toning throughout, else very good, with the original transmittal envelope.
