Description:

DONALD SEGRETTI
(b. 1941) American lawyer best known for his role on the reelection committee of President Richard Nixon and his connections to the infamous Watergate scandal. Great content A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., California, December 3, 1973, to Mr. Rosenberg regarding the ongoing trial. In part: '...I strongly feel it is inappropriate to discuss the specifics of any case that is pending before the courts...especially true in a case involving an individual such as Mr. Chapin who has been subject to a great deal of pre trial publicity...' Dwight Chapin (b. 1940) was Deputy Assistant to President Nixon and also implicated in the scandal. Segretti knew Chapin from their time together at USC, and as a result Chapin hired him to join the Nixon reelection committee with the purpose of running a campaign of 'dirty tricks.' Most of the tricks involved forging letters to incriminate or start rumors about political opponents, and Segretti was paid with Nixon's presidential campaigns funds for his efforts. He would later be prosecuted and convicted of three counts of distributing forged literature and sentenced to six months in prison. His actions were one of the early indicators to investigators and members of the press that the Watergate Scandal was more than just a burglary.
