Description:

DOLLEY MADISON
(1768-1849) First Lady of the United States, wife of President James Madison. Known for hosting social functions at the White House with members of government to stimulate bipartisan cooperation, largely setting the standard of the role of the Presidents wife. Famously saved the classic portrait of George Washington when the White House was set aflame during the War of 1812. A.L.S. 'D. P. Madison' as First Lady, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], July 6, 1811, to naval surgeon Jonathan Bullus regarding pieces of jewelry. In part: 'I avail myself of your permission to return one of the two watches and both chains. I enclose the amt. of one watch $55 and thank you sincerely for the many proofs of kindness you have manifested towards me...Will you kindly have the goodness to send me a key of the blue enamel'd watch, as I cannot possible procure one here. There was none sent...' Slightly toned with tears repaired on the verso with tape, scattered ink stains. The jewelry discussed in this letter likely would have been worn by Dolley at one point during the many White House events she planned, as she was always an engaging and vivacious host who dressed to impress.
