Cav., fatally wounded at Cedar Creek and died the next day at Middletown, Virginia pens a fine association war-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., ‘Headquarters', Sep. 14, 1864, sent to Brigadier Gen. John T. Sprague, in part: ‘...I understand that an appointment has been made for Lieut. E.B. Williston, Battery D 2nd U.S. Artillery, to be Lieut. Col. of the 6th Reg. N.Y. Vols....Lieut. Williston has been serving with this Brigade since April last, and I take the greatest pleasure in adding my testimony to his great merits as an officer...' Signed at the conclusion as brigadier general. On the verso are the endorsements of five brigadier generals and one major general, some being A.E.S. (i.e., Sheridan) while others are only E.S. (i.e., Horatio Wright). Includes: PHILIP H. SHERIDAN (1831-1888) Union major general of cavalry and famous Indian fighter. Sheridan's fighting prowess was evident throughout the war, from Booneville to Chickamauga and the elimination of J.E.B. Stuart at Yellow Tavern, GEORGE H. CHAPMAN (1832-1882) Union brigadier general who served under Buford in resisting the Confederate advance on the first day at Gettysburg, served in the Mine Run and Overland campaigns, wounded at Winchester, JAMES B. RICKETTS (1817-1887) Union brigadier general captured at Bull Run, later he led at Antietam, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg and wounded in action six times, HORATIO G. WRIGHT (1820-1899) Union major general who led fighting at Gettysburg, Spotsylvania (where wounded), and Appomattox, WESLEY MERRITT (1834-1910) Union major general of cavalry who fought at Gettysburg, Culpeper, and rode with Sheridan on raids to Richmond and Yellow Tavern, ALFRED T. TORBERT (1833-1880) Union brigadier general who led at Yorktown, Antietam and Gettysburg, briefly headed Army of the Shenandoah, wounded at South Mountain, and DAVID A. RUSSELL (1820-1864) Union general, killed in action as brigadier general during the Battle of Opequon. Some tears along the mailing folds, light spotting, else very good. Accompanied by a war-date A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., ‘Hellers 2nd Brigade', Sep. 7, 1864, penned by EMORY UPTON (1839-1881) United States Army General and military strategist, prominent for his role in leading infantry to attack entrenched positions successfully at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. In part: ‘...I have recently learned that 1st Lieut. E.B. Williston...has been recommended for the Lieut. Colonel of the 6th N.Y. Art...I know Lieut. Williston well -when in command of Battery ‘D'...was a most efficient officer...has distinguished himself in every battle in which he has been engaged...respectively recommend him to the favor of His Excellency Gov. Seymour. You will secure in him a faithful, gallant, efficient officer...'. Signed at the conclusion as brigadier general. Very good condition. Williston was breveted lieutenant colonel on Sep. 19, 1864.
