Description:

DIZZY GILLESPIE GRAMMY NOMINATION PLAQUES
Pair of laminated wood plaques, each 8 1/2" x 10 1/2", each nominating legendary jazz trumpeter DIZZY GILLESPIE (1917-1993) and a collaborator for an award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, better known as a Grammy. The first, for the 1979 awards period, nominates Gillespie and jazz pianist COUNT BASIE (1904-1984) for "Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Group", for their album "The Gifted Ones. It is signed in facsimile by Academy president Jay Lowy. The second, for the 1981 awards period, nominates Gillespie and Latin jazz percussionist MONGO SANTAMARIA (1922-2003) for "Best Latin Recording", for their live rendition of the jazz standard "Summertime", recorded at the 1980 Montreaux Jazz Festival. It is signed in facsimile by Academy president William Ivey. Unfortunately, neither award went to Gillespie and his collaborators; the 1979 award went to Chick Corea and Gary Burton, while the 1981 award went to Clare Fischer. Both are in very good condition. Ex: the estate of Dizzy Gillespie.
