736. JOHN A. DIX (1798-1879) Union major general most remembered for his threat to shoot anyone hauling down the American flag, and his suppression of the bloody New York draft riots. His signature on a 3" x 5" card mounted to a larger sheet. Mounted together to a board with a engraved CDV of Dix and a patriotic cover bearing his famous words: "If any one attempts to haul down the American Flag, Shoot him on the Spot". Offered together with the signature of ROBERT TOOMBS as Senator from Georgia on a small slip, matted with a Portrait of Toombs. Two pieces, very good. $75-100
