Description:

DIPLOMATIC COAT OF RAYMOND HENRY PERRY JONES, RAILROADED DURING GRANT'S ADMINISTRATION
Diplomatic coat with tails owned and worn by RAYMOND HENRY JONES PERRY (1836-1902). The double-breasted navy blue wool coat has two rows of five brass diplomatic buttons at front, each button marked: "D. EVANS & CO. ATTLEBORO, MA". The unhemmed pleated tails have two button at top, and then drop 17" below the level of the front to terminate with the same type of brass button on either side. Cuffs have smaller versions of the same buttons, three attached at each cuff. Within, the jacket is heavily padded and lined quilted. "Brooks Brothers" New York label attached at neck line. Purchased by our consignor with a group of Jones' personal possessions. Very good. Raymond H. J. Perry served at sea from 1858 until the start of the Civil War when he lead cavalry and artillery units. He remained in the military, serving under Sheridan and as a head of scouts in Mexico, Texas and Kansas. In 1869, Perry was appointed Consul and Diplomatic Agent to Santa Domingo and represented the U.S. in negotiating a treaty annexing Santo Domingo and leasing Samana Bay as an American naval base. As was the case with many "arrangements" in Grant's administration, many of the principals on both sides of the plans for annexation were deeply corrupted. Perry discovered the plot and advised Congress, which was already split over racial attitudes against the largely black country. Certain powers attempted to have Perry arrested and sent to Texas, and even kidnapped. This, and other criminal activity led to a Congressional vote killing the annexation...and Perry's career.
