Description:

DIARY FROM THE LIBERTY SHIP S.S. JUBAL EARLY
Crewman's diary by Lt. Roger L. Derby, USNR, from the armed Liberty Ship S.S. JUBAL EARLY, 7,244 tons, built by the Todd Houston Shipbuilding Corporation and delivered to the WSA in April 1943. Her wartime managers were Lykes Bros. SS Co., New Orleans. Scrapped in 1968. The journal, about 200pp. in a neat hand, covers the period from March, 1944 to March, 1945 with travel as far as Aden and Ceylon. Good convoy content mentions depth charge attacks on suspected U-boats, attacks by enemy aircraft, reports of action received from other vessels, target practice by the gun crews, drills, etc. along with reports of repairs made at sea, loading and discharging, crew events onboard, constant maintenance, etc. Good insight into the extensive work required to maintain the vessel and her arms while at sea. Fine.
