Description:

DEWITT CLINTON PROPOSES A NEW ALBANY STATE HOUSE
DEWITT CLINTON (1769 - 1828) American politician, mayor of New York City and governor of the state, an ardent campaigner for the construction of the Erie Canal. Most interesting A.D. (unsigned), 2pp. legal folio [n.p., n.d. but likely Albany ca. 1825-28]. Clinton drafts 'An Act for completing the State House in the City of Albany', proposing the formation of a corporation to undertake contracting the work, setting aside an initial $25,000 to be paid to the comptroller for a warrant to be issued to the commissioners 'for erecting a building for public purposes in the City of Albany...for the accommodation of the Legislature in November next...', apparently with an additional $50,000 to be earmarked for later spending. The verso of the document bears an attached second page of notes expounding on the idea of corporate ownership. Some marginal tears and a corner chip with no loss of text, else very good.
