Description:

A uniquely engraved standard issue German M31 aluminum canteen, 8 in. x 3 in. x 3 in., with a black plastic screw top and the original wool sleeve. The sleeve still has its original buttons and leather belt strap. The canteen bears some dents but is intricately decorated with etched carvings. One near the top says 'Georg Koepfl - Afrika - 1943- In the last battle of Tunisia'. The reverse side is etched: 'June 20 1943 in prison.' Other carvings include a large German Iron Cross with a swastika at the center, a walking camel, an anti-aircraft gun, a rising sun, and a tent labeled 'bird cage' surrounded by a fence. Fine condition. The Battle of Tunisia was a series of conflicts in the North African theater of World War II. Its outcome was a major Allied victory and it is estimated that almost 250,000 Axis prisoners of war were taken.
