Description:

DESTRUCTION OF NAGASAKI
Excellent archive relating to the destruction of Nagasaki, a large collection of U.S. Army Air Corps photographs of the blast site and a topographical map detailing the bomb damage to Nagasaki. On Aug. 9, 1945, Nagasaki was the target of the world's second atomic bomb attack (and first plutonium bomb) at 11:02 a.m., when the north of the city was destroyed and an estimated 40,000 people were killed by the bomb nicknamed "Fat Man". It is highly probable that all photographs are part of the "U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey, The Effects of the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki" issued by the Truman administration on June 19, 1946, as the photographs come from the personal effects of Major C. Ralph Fletcher, an Army Air Corps intelligence officer who led a Bombing Survey team in Nagasaki. Additionally, the included map is entitled, "U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey Atomic Bomb Damage Nagasaki Japan" and published by the "Army Map Service, U.S. Army, Washington D.C., 1946". Photographic images include: a set of nine b/w, 8" x 10" aerial views of Nagasaki damage, highlighting the expected scorched earth and flattened manufacturing buildings and 22 b/w 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" ground shots of both interior and exterior damage to buildings. Along with several unique b/w 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" photographs: a picture of a group of Japanese children posing outside the rubble of an official building; a group of Japanese praying inside an undamaged Catholic church; a piece of scorched concrete held against a ruler. Various conditions, mostly very good to fine.
