Description:

(DESMOND DOSS) BATTLE OF OKINAWA SIGNAL CORPS PHOTO ALBUM
Excellent photo album containing 51 original 4" x 5" b/w U.S. Army Signal Corps photographs, depicting combat during and the aftermath of the Battle of Okinawa in the spring of 1945. Each photograph bears a typed caption on the verso, giving a short description of the scene, the date it was captured, and the name and unit of the photographer. Each photo is also stamped "Restricted". The scenes depicted include an American flag planted on an invasion beach, captured Japanese munitions, American soldiers in foxholes, Okinawan civilians volunteering for work details and and receiving medical care, destroyed Japanese and American weapons and tanks, soldiers advacing under artillery cover, ruined fields of battle, burning buildings, and settlements reduced to rubble. Of the images presented here, the most notable depicts conscientious objector, U.S. Army medic and Medal of Honor winner DESMOND DOSS (1919-2006) standing atop the Maeda Escarpment, nicknamed "Hacksaw Ridge" by American forces, down which he lowered 75 wounded men of his unit while under heavy enemy fire. Although the caption to this photo does not identify Doss by name, it does state that the men in the picture belong to Doss''s unit, the 307th Infantry Regiment, and dates the image to May 4, 1945, just days after his heroic actions. The album also includes fifteen additional 4 1/2" x 2 3/4" b/w snapshots depicting scenes from the Pacific theater, most unlabled although with some dated on the verso. These include two images of a devastated Tokyo, dated after the war''s end, as well as a Marine cemetery, a view of Army General "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell, and more. Lastly, the album contains an I.S.P., 8" x 10" b/w, depicting Welsh football player and RAF parachutist ALFRED STANLEY MORGAN (1920-1971), who would participate in the Bruneval Raid of February 1942, as well as airborne operations in Italy, France and Greece. The image shows Morgan in a fur-lined parka, signed by him in black ink at lower right, adding the inscription "To Jim kindest regards to a very good friend". A fine, varied collection of outstanding World War II photographs.
