Description:

DESK SWASTIKA PRESENTED TO A HITLER YOUTH GROUP BY A GAULEITER
A fine association item, a large chrome-plated stainless steel mobile swastika presented to a Hitler Youth organization by a German gauleiter. The desk ornament measures 10 in. tall and 8 in. across. The base in engraved with black-filled lettering on two sides, one side reading: 'Ihrem Gauleiter Staatsrat Grohe' ('Your Gauleiter State Councilor Grohe'), the other side engraved: 'Die H[itler]. J[ugend]. der Fa. A. Wirth & Co. Erkelenz'. Some very light surface corrosion, a bit more affecting the insides of the arms of the swastika, overall very good to fine condition. JOSEF GROHE (1902–1987) was the long-serving Gauleiter of Gau Cologne-Aachen and Reichskommissar for Belgium and Northern France toward the end of the war. He participated in armed resistance and acts of sabotage against the French occupation of the Ruhr in 1922 and 1923. A virulent anti-Semite, during speeches in March 1935 Grohé advocated renewed boycotts and intensified attacks on Jews as a means to raise support for the Party among the lower middle classes. On 18 July 1944, Grohe was made the Reichskommissar of the newly created Reichskommissariat of Belgium and Northern France. Grohe remained dedicated to the Nazi cause for the rest of his life and showed no remorse. Alfred Wirth & Co. was a critical German manufacturer of oil rigs and drilling equipment. Undoubtedly, the Hitler Youth provided labor to the plant, probably late in the war.
