1089. ALBERT DESALVO (1930 -1973) "The Boston Strangler", responsible for killing 13 women, but was never charged. He was incarcerated for unrelated offenses when he was stabbed to death in 1973. The Strangler case was never closed. DeSalvo's confession remains the only evidence linking him to the case, and it contradicts autopsy findings. Chilling and unique archive of 31 items pertaining to DeSalvo, including three T.L.S's, two A.L.S.'s, an original 1947 signed photograph, and jewelry made by DeSalvo in prison, all sent to 16-year-old Vivian Kay Wyatt in San Diego, California, who had written to him after she had read a book about the Boston Strangler. The existence of these letters was first made pubic on the July 24, 2001 edition of Dateline, NBC. Vivian Wyatt herself was the subject of a full page story in the May 7, 2002 edition of The National Enquirer. Comprises: First,. A T.L.S. "Al DeSalvo", 4pp, 4to., Dec. 9, 1972. DeSalvo's first letter to Wyatt, DeSalvo talks of missing his children, and his ex-wife's refusal to forward letters and gifts to them. In small part, "...It's now been nine years since I have heard from my children, even though my ex-wife, agreed that she would let me write to my kids...The gifts I sent to them for their birthdays, never got to them...I have suffered...much not hearing how they were growing up...I am blinded by tears just writing to you and looking at your picture...I'm getting ready to write my new book, it will be finished in about two months or so...I will also be going on trial if things work out right!!...". A second T.L.S. "Al", 2pp, 4to., Dec. 25, 1972, in which DeSalvo thanks Vivian for a Christmas card, makes sure it is okay with her mother to correspond with her and describes a custom made pendant for her which is included in the lot. In part, "Seeing my children, will be Xmas, not until then ever!!! Your the closest to having Xmas, I love you for that!!!...Does your mother care if you write to me? What are her feelings if she has any?... I have a very special pendant, I made it up myself, (there is only one like it in the whole world!!!!) As a matter of fact, the stone slab is as rare as the person who made it!! Ha Ha !! This one is called petrified wood...On the polished slab I put your zodiac sign Feb. 6 and praying hands...You have made my life worth living!!!...and so much more brighter!!!...Enclosed is a few pictures, these are only proofs...I would like a picture of you in full from head to toe". Along with seven pairs of earrings handmade by Albert DeSalvo, six made of stone and one made of shells. Vivian has noted on a small sheet: "These earrings have never been out of their box". With a glossy 5" x 3 1/2" candid photo of brothers Albert and Joseph DeSalvo, circa 1947, posing with two young children in a doorway, signed and inscribed on the reverse in black ballpoint "15 years old working on the Cape, I'm on the left and that is my brother Joe 16 yrs old. Albert DeSalvo, To Vivian 2-14-73". Another A.L.S. "Al", 9pp, 8vo, Feb. 7, 1973. DeSalvo writes again from the infirmary, with the prison still locked down. He grows more open and comfortable with Vivian, describing the new warden, bestowing fatherly advice on relationships and love. In part: "...How is my little girl? I'm still in the hospital and the prison is still under 24 hour lock-up! I didn't wish to upset you, in any way, so I really haven't told you what is really happening in here...This new superintendent is a madman! They call him crazy Ray. It's real bad in here right now...However; as it always will be! The truth always comes out in the end!!!...". Also an A.L.S. "Al" 3pp, 8vo, April 4, 1973, in which DeSalvo writes from the hospital in Norfolk, Mass., after surgery on his shoulder and arm. He offers comfort to Vivian, who at the time was experiencing personal problems. In part: "...I'm in the hospital. I had my arm operated on. I'm getting better...My writer has been up this past week, my book is coming along just fine. I wish I could be there too hold you and say the things your little heart is begging to hear, as only a father knows...your going to have to forgive me for not having been able to write...How tall are you about? From your picture next to Leroy, your no longer a little girl...I can understand why all the boys are chasing you". A T.L.S. "A," 3pp. 8vo., April 24, 1973. In reply to Vivian Wyatt's letter in which she had told DeSalvo that she wanted to kill herself, he writes: "...Oh! If you were here I'd eat you right up!!! You make a guy so happy!!!...I'm on my last week with my book...my writer has been coming up every day for the last 4 weeks. Boy will I ever be so happy when it is finished!!! I'm going to have a copy signed special for you....do me something special...Send me a picture of you in your white bikini!!! You must be a knockout!!!...I only want to appreciate what all others are able to see and adore...I will never be lonely again, you will be my last love!!! I will write you a letter, just as I would write my daughter...". With a copy of "True Police Cases" magazine, Aug. 1967, with the cover story proclaiming "I am The Boston Strangler" (worn, detached cover); the May 7, 2002 issue of "The National Enquirer" with a full page story, "Boston Strangler Who Confessed Was Not the Real Killer," containing their interview of Vivian Wyatt and citing expert opinion that DeSalvo was not the real killer, an unsigned T.L., one page, dated Jan. 22, 1973 to DeSalvo from Screen Gems Video Services, attempting to arrange an interview and television show about DeSalvo regarding his trial and life in prison; a clipped newspaper article with photos showing DeSalvo making jewelry; three clipped articles from the "San Diego Union Tribune" concerning DeSalvo's death; a morning and an evening edition of the "Boston Herald American," each dated Nov. 27, 1973 with front page story of DeSalvo's murder.
