Description:

"DER STURMER" POLITICAL CARTOON
Very rare original political artwork originally intended for the pages of Julius Stericher's virulently anti-Semitic newspaper "Der Sturmer", executed in India ink on a 12 1/2" x 10 3/4" sheet of heavy stock by cartoonist PHILIP RUPPRECHT (1900-?), who has signed his work "Fips". The panel bears six individual political cartoons which include a caricatured Jew lifting a bag from money from a pool of blood, Uncle Sam quaking beneath a figure of death labeled "Bolshevism", a helmeted Churchill with a dagger concealed behind his back, and so on. One vertical crease where folded, else very good. Originally intended for publication in April, 1945; possibly unpublished. Rupprecht gained favor with Streicher when his former employer sent him to produce a caricature of Streicher at a court appearance, he instead produced a caricature of Munich's Jewish Mayor, Hermann Luppe (Streicher's opponent). This led to him being hired by Der Stürmer, where he went on to produce innumerable anti-Semitic caricatures. He was put on trial in 1945 and sentenced to six years hard labor.
