Description:

"DER FESTUNGBOTE"
A rare U-boat related item, a copy of Der Festungsbote, or "The Fortress Boat", published in the occupied French port of La Rochelle, 4pp. large 4to., Nov. 18, 1944. When the Allies landed in Normandy on D-Day, June 6th, Hitler had ordered that La Rochelle be declared a "fortress", and the city was garrisoned with 20,000 soldiers. The port was crucial for U-boat operations as it contained bomb-resistant pens and repair facilities. The first page offers war-related news of "the battle on the border", while within mention is made of the V1 and V2 rockets, U.S. tonnage sunk, wishful thinking for three months of "total war", some cultural news, military-related poetry, etc. A few marginal chips, else very good.
